January 18, 20233 yr Hi all , i'm having a little issue and cant find my problem and hope somebody can help me. I was using unraid on 2 X 6tb wd red , parity and disk. The disk got full and with boxing day specials a bought 2 X 8tb wd reds pro and i'm having a problem with the 'raid' system in unraid . I'm getting ( disk in parity slot is not bigest) , i tried to add one of the 8tb in the parity and wait for it to be active and gives me the same error at the second I try to add the 8tb drive in the disk 2 . I read that it can be something like HPA but it doent look like I'm having that issue : /dev/sda: SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 20 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 max sectors = 0/1, HPA is enabled /dev/sdb: max sectors = 15628053168/15628053168, HPA is disabled /dev/sdc: max sectors = 15628053168/15628053168, HPA is disabled /dev/sdd: max sectors = 11721045168/11721045168, HPA is disabled /dev/sde: max sectors = 11721045168/11721045168, HPA is disabled /dev/sdf: max sectors = 488397168/488397168, HPA is disabled can somebody tell me what i'm doing wrong ? preferably I would prefer to have 2 disk available and whatever disk needed for parity and rebuilding if one drive fails . thank you for your help Ric
January 19, 20233 yr Community Expert Solution You can only replace one disk at a time. No data disk can be larger than parity, so you have to replace parity and let it rebuild before you can use the other 8TB Attach diagnostics to your NEXT post in this thread.
January 19, 20233 yr Author thank you for the repply , I did the new config and right now the 8tb is parity and I have disk 1 8tb and disk 2 is the original 6tb data disk . its parity syncing right now . those that mean that one parity drive can repair any of the 2 disk if hardware disk failure ? can i put the extra 6tb drive has data now ? or parity will only work on 2 drives ? , sorry asking all the question I can tower-diagnostics-20230118-2134.zip
January 19, 20233 yr Community Expert Parity provides protection for many disks, but only one failure at a time. Parity by itself can recover nothing, all other disks are required to rebuild a missing disk. https://wiki.unraid.net/Manual/Overview#Parity-Protected_Array Dual parity allows 2 failures.
