July 19, 201114 yr Does anyone know if the WD10EALS is an AFT drive or old 512b sectors? This is the Blue 7200 RPM 1 TB drive. I am pretty sure it is not AFT, but can't seem to find anything really credible one way or the other. I am preclearing for use as a cache drive not 4K aligned but want to fix it if I have it wrong.
July 21, 201114 yr I don't think it is, but I'm pretty sure you can format it as one with no performance problems. If I remember correctly, when formatting for unraid; Old drive - 512 = No problems Old drive - 4K = No problems AF drive - 512 = Problems AF drive - 4K = No Problems So you should just align everything to 4K and you wont have any problems. I could be wrong though, so you may want to wait till someone more knowledgeable confirms this.
July 22, 201114 yr chunky is correct. Any drive can be formatted with 4k alignment with one single exception: a WDEARS drive with a jumper installed. WDEARS drives with no jumper are safe to format with the 4k alignment.
