how to update a docker image with custom packages?

Hey Guys,

I'm migrating a homebridge VM to run in unraid docker app and I've discovered several tools and packages that don't come preinstalled on the official onzu/homebridge docker app.  I can log into to the console and install those packages manually but rebooting/restarting the app wipes out the changes.

I understand that the docker image probably needs to be updated with these packages but I don't really know how to do that.

Can someone guide me on this process?  do I somehow create  my own docker image based off of the official homebridge docker image?  I basically just need to install the dnsutils package and some additional python modules.

Thanks,
