Starting fresh - New starter best practices

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm building out a new server due to reasons.

Is there a best practices somewhere I can follow for good tweaks like TurboWrite or what not?

And choosing the best drive format and why and so on?

Just general tweaks to make unRAID amazing...

Are you not planning to use your existing data disks from your old server?

Yes but also might just totally start fresh.. Nothing really to be lost.

So would be happy to wipe them and start again if there is better ways now days.

I did start that last server like 5 years ago so lots may have changed or been better

I checked your diagnostics from a few months ago, and I like the way your disks are setup. I don't use encryption myself and only have 2 pools instead of the 3 pools you have. From the name I assume one of those pools is security cam recording? If that has all been working for you I see no reason to change it.

I never bother with Turbo Write myself, and you have a lot of spinners so that seems even more reason to not do it.

I thought it would help with more spinners, guess i got the wrong end of the stick.

Yeah I have one pool where all the recordings go to that ssd pool, no real reason other than I had those SSD's spare so why not use them and keep them running 24/7

I might change it on the new build and dedicate a drive to it, maybe a WD Purple or something but not there yet.

Will help with speed, but will spin all disks. Normal write only spins parity and the disk being written.
