July 19, 201114 yr Hey I'm new and wondering which release of unraid shall I use/buy... the newest 5.0 or 4.7. The 5.0beta9 is pretty stable now with no known severe defects. As a new user, you may however want to play it safe and use 4.7 (as you don't need the 3TB support in 5.0) also is it neccesary to have a parity drive to begin with. i only have 2 TB drives so was hoping to add a parity later. no biggy tho. It isn't necessary, but highly highly recommended. Much of the purpose of having UnRAID is the protection derived from the parity drive. If you're prepared to live with the risk of loss, the UnRAID will support this configuration

They will do lots of read/writes which will mean constant spin-ups of the parity drive. Not that you will require a plus or pro license to use a cache drive. Will work equally well on 4.7 or 5.0
