Moving to a new case

Featured Replies

Well my unraid build has been slowly growing. I am currently running out of places to put my HDDs. I was thinking of upgrading the case. I do not plan on upgrading any hardware right now except the case. Are there any suggestions on how to make this an easy transfer? I not positive but im pretty sure I cant unplug all my drives and plug them back into different ports? correct? Any tips on how to stay organized?

While everything is still in place you could maybe label the drives:

like

drive 1 = (sda)  = sata port 0

drive 2 = (sdb)  = sata port 1

Maybe mark the sata cables?

Make screenshot from your drives setup!

Prepared like this everything should go perfectly

Take a screenshot of your unRAID Devices page before you do anything.  Also, run a parity check and make sure it completes without errors (you don't want to find out mid-move that you've got some other unrelated problem).  The only drive that it is crucial to get right is the parity drive.  Your data drives can be plugged in anywhere except for the parity drive slot, unRAID will figure it out for you.  If you do change the order of your data disks, you might have to edit your User Share settings to reflect the new disk assignments.  Other than that, you are good to go.

What is truly amazing is that swapping mobo, cpu, RAM, etc. is all just as easy as swapping cases.

If you're using a recent 5.0 beta, you can do just that!  I added a new drive interface card, and moved some of my drives over to that - unRAID didn't bat an eyelid ... just started up as though nothing had changed.

drive 1 = (sda)  = sata port 0

drive 2 = (sdb)  = sata port 1

Assuming sda will always be on port 0 etc can be dangerous assumption as sd? can change between reboots depending on which disk happens to be ready first as Linux loads.  It would be safer to note:

drive 1 = Serial_Number_abc  = sata port 0

drive 2 = Serial_Number_def  = sata port 1

Which is basically what Rajahal advises, as the screen shot provides the disk to serial number mapping.

I think that with the screenshots and proper labeling you're basically covered when it comes to UnRAID. There are a couple of other things you might want to look at when swapping a case, such as PSU placement, size of cpu cooler, etc., and if your current cables will reach. I've been surprised on case swaps with a need for the odd bit to make it work. Cable extenders, fans and MB mounts come to mind.
