I removed one of my data drives to test what would happen in the event of a drive failure.  The drive wasn't reported as missing until after a reboot.  My preference would be to have the drive reported as missing, swap it with a new one, without powering down.

What version are you running? The latest 5.0 beta series supports warm-swapping.

5.0-beta9.  I'm happy to provide some testing, if that will help determine the cause.  I want to work the kinks out of this server before I start trusting data to it.

You have to have AHCI enabled in the BIOS, and be using AHCI SATA ports for it to work.

That's the problem then.  My ASUS P5G41T-M motherboard uses the Intel ICH7 chipset, and apparently only the ICH7R chipset supports AHCI.

 

No hot-swapping for me.
