New Microserver - Backplane not working?

Featured Replies

Hi! Im new to the forum, also with Supermicro servers. I ordered a 36 bay server wich has two backplanes. One 24 disk backplane (model nr: bpn-sas2-846el1) and a 12 disk backplane.

here is the problem:

- In the raid config (raid card is LSI MegaRaid 9271-8i), only the 12-disk backplane and attached disks shows up.

- Ive tried switching SFF cables and outputs on the raid card.

- The disks blink for half a second after I press the power button/startup. On the backside (pointing inwards into the server) of the backplane I can see a solid blue light.

- Ive tried with a different PSU to power the backplane.

- The seller said it was working before it was shipped.

- Ive now tried with a HBA IT mode card, and only the disks attached to the 12-disk backplane shows up in ubuntu.

What Im I missing?

Don't know about that hardware, but you don't want RAID controllers in Unraid

Post the diagnostics after booting with this.

Test with 1 HDD in that backplane.

The backplane can have firmware updates.

Supermicro are good at firmware updates, you can also ask for those over e-mail and hunt them on their websies.

You can also try simple checks like voltages dust, metal dust particles, loose cables connectors.

Wrong ports and unplugged stuff - this can happen.

Keep doublechecking things.

The LSI cards can connect disks in JBOD mode that's the same like IT mote maybe with different "queue depth"

Also if you want to use the cache on the LSI you will need to at least RAID0 a disk and maybe a battery/supercap.

What do you want to do with it?

Don't switch stuff the outputs have a specific order.

You can also try to check cooling on the LSI and update the firmware on it.

During the firmware update you can reset to defaults, this can often help.
