advanced format drive question

so heres my question. i just found out about this whole advanced format issue and realized i have a wd20ears. i looked at the tutorial here:

but dont want to mess anything up. i want to correct anything that may cause a performance hit but how can i tell if my drive is in "compatibility mode"? any other drives that i may need to correct?

Did you install any JUMPER on your EARS drives?

no, no jumper.

Format all new drives a 4-aligned and do not add any jumpers and you will be fine.

i reformatted it but it is still unaligned. i didnt see any type of menu option to change it. i followed this:

and typed in:

dd if=/dev/zero count=200 of=/dev/sdX

 

and when it finished it was still unaligned. i think i missed something.

Check "Settings", "Disk Settings". It will only apply to new disks or "reformatting". You'll need to determine if any other disks are AF and change them one at a time.

i checked that setting and it was set to mbr 4k aligned. how do i set it to reformat? i thought that was the command i used but i guess not.
