How to tell if a USB key has an ID?

Featured Replies

I have my server up and running with a non-serialized USB flash drive.  I know this because of the trailing zeros.  So I have another 128MB flash drive (Verbatim Store'n'go), but I don't know if it has a serial number cause it's not on the server.  Is there a way to determine this in XP?  I looked all over in Device Manager and in Disk Mgmt and can't seem to find it.

Here is one way to do it.

Make the new USB bootable with unraid. (follow the instructions on the main page)

Shut down your server.

Put in the new USB and boot it up into unraid.

In the unraid management options it will show you if it has a key or not.

This is how I did it reliably.

That's what I ended up doing too. 8)

Wanted something a little easier--and didn't want to take down my server.  I did it anyway because it gave me the opportunity to mount the key inside the case with a internal USB header to USB adapter.  I just copied all the files from my old no-ID key to this other one, so when it came up, it was already set up with my shares and settings.  Worked like a champ.

Good news, the other 128MB key appears to have a GUID, so I guess I'm done.  I'm just happy I can use a small--otherwise almost useless key for this instead of having to buy a new one.
