Use Windows VM at an iMac (as a Tower-PC/Monitor-combination, even though the iMac is not usable as monitor)

Featured Replies

I have an iMac 5k 27" 2015 (which doesn't support being used as a monitor) and a tower PC with an RTX 3060. The problem is that I have to fit 2 PCs on one desk, and I want to get rid of one monitor and somehow get the image from the tower PC onto my iMac. It's important to me that I have low latency for gaming.

My idea is to put Unraid on the tower PC. However, I'm wondering if it's better to leave the iMac as it is and simply stream Unraid with Windows (over a LAN cable) for gaming, or if I should convert the iMac into a monitor and then assemble a "normal" tower PC setup using a DP cable (and also add iOS as a VM to the tower PC)?

What would be the best solution for me, or am I maybe making a mistake in my thinking?

Best regards, Michael

that wont be fun usually and is often a hit & miss ... read the macinabox thread to get an idea, also your hardware (macos upper Sierra supports AMD Cards only) may not be the best choise for your Project with your RTX3060.

so, does Streaming work, yes and even pretty good to at least a shield tv and windows pc's i can tell, how mac is handling as a streaming client ... i cant tell, may just give it a try and see how it fits your needs.

personally with my imac experience and macinabox ... if you like macos, keep it on the mac hardware ... or, just try it out, thats one of the nice features, try it, if its crap, wipe it and make something different, then you know if it fits your personal needs ...
