so when you getting a 3tb drive

Recommended Posts

So with 3tb drives working in the beta, I was wondering when you may make the plunge to 3tb

I am waiting for 2 things

1. stable non-beta 5.0 release, soon please ;D

2. right price point $100 or so, havn't decided yet

3. right now I am saving up to do a purchase to fill my server in one shot

Don't wait too long.  Won't be long before Hitachi hard drives are gone, and what' left is a lot more expensive and not nearly as good!

5.0 beta is now reasonably mature and very stable (from array integrity perspective) at this point. It has a significant bug fix not in the 4.7 release.  Waiting for an official 5.0 release may be long wait, depending on Tom's plans.

I don't advocate jumping onto a new beta, but at this point I would recommend 5.0 over 4.7 for a user willing to read and monitor the announcement thread.  Especially if you plan to use unRAID with 3T drives and/or Applie Macs.

Again, someone is getting hung up about the 'beta' label.  All current releases, except the latest betas, are known to have a known bug which could strike at any time, causing significant loss of data.

I know which version of the software I would rather trust my data to ... see my sig.

I've written about 10 TB's of data to my new server with all 3TB drives and still no issues to test out, rebuilt parity with new disk, re-tested parity, simulated missing disk, etc... all Hitachi drives, even tested my SAS-MV8 card with no issues I could see. This week I went ahead and put it into production mode i was that confident with it, 5.0b10

so 4.7 is gonna be updated soon to avoid this bug ?

as i have a card that from what i read WILL not be supported under 5.0x builds of unraid...

Only LimeTech knows for sure, but he has indicated his intention to release a 4.7.1 soon.

Ahem, for those of us somehow not in the know...  What is this bug???

It sounds terrifying.

How can one know if the issue affects them?

Thanks,

Russell

LimeTech describes the bug in the unRAID Server Release 5.0-beta8d thread.  It wasn't really a terrifying bug as it affected so few users.  On page 2 of the thread, LimeTech says

Something interesting about this bug: it has existed since day 1 and is also in older releases of the original linux 'md' driver (later releases of the linux 'md' driver have changed greatly and I didn't go and analyze if the bug is still there).

I've already got three 3TB Western Digital Greens. Working perfectly on my SAT2-MV8 controllers.

I don't trust Hitachi, I know they've improved recently in reliability, however, I still can't trust them. I've had to many failures/issues with them in the past. Western Digital's RMA service is also less of a headache, and quicker, in my experience. I feel $139.99 for the Western Digitals is a fair price, and its a better price per gig ratio than when I bought my 2TBs 8 months ago.

No reason why someone shouldn't be on Beta9/10 right now. It has less bugs than 4.7, and also fixes a critical issue that 4.7 (and older versions) have. I've not heard of anyone losing ANY data using an unRAID beta. It's almost always user error and/or hardware failure.

Of course you have the right to your opinion on Hitachi, and there have been models in the past with poor quality, recent Hitachi's (2T+) have been very reliable in my experience. BackBlaze also toured the the 3T coolspin as the most reliable in their experiences.
