[6.11.5] Seagate SAS Drive problem or weirdness or am I too new at this

Featured Replies

So, I am trying to figure out what this issue or non-issue is

Hardware:

4 x 3TB Seagate Exos 7E8 SAS Drives
Dell H310 flashed to IT mode
Asus z97m-plus UEFI motherboard
16GB Non-ECC Ram

As vanilla system as it gets form unRaid 6.11.5 perspective (no docker no VMs no shares etc)

Run bunch of tests including full Preclear 15ish hours across 4 drives

All clear no issues reported, created array, no issues no read errors and all that, as perfect as you would expect

unRaid has HDDs marked as follows:

/dev/sda (unRaid usb)
/dev/sdb (Parity SAS)
/dev/sdc (Disk1 SAS)
/dev/sdd (Disk2 SAS)
/dev/sde (Disk3 SAS)

Now the problem (?), it is loud (I was expecting SAS to be way louder than typical consumer HDDs)

To be more specific only ONE drive is loud, the last one in the array "sde"

It whines and soft clicks every 4-5 seconds (I mean it is a loud whine and noticeable soft click, listen to attached audio 4s long )

I thought it was bad drive so I removed it. After removing "sde", the "new last drive sdd" starts doing the same thing ...after "sdd" it's "sdc" that takes over and so on ... you get the pattern ;)

Of course, after adding them all back we are back to "sde" doing all the whining :)

I have added Shares despite this and all works absolutely fine :)

I can spin all these down without issues (so I can sleep ;))

I will try all permutations with drives over the next few days

What are your thoughts, am I just paranoid ?

Is it possible no one ever run into something like this ?? 😕

I stumbled upon a workaround but not a real solution.

I have setup a timed spindown on all drives (using spindown SAS plugin).

After one cycle of spinning down and spinning up the issue goes away (until next reboot or awakening from sleep)
