I have a P180 for one of my other PC's, and it's one of the nicest cases I've ever worked on (as long as the PSU cables are long enough since the PSU sits on the bottom away from the MB. If I could still use a 5in3 or 4in3 in the top external 5.25", I could get either 6 or 7 internally with what I believe is adequate cooling, for a total of 10-12 drives total depending on how I had it setup. I think this will be fine (especially since I'm only starting with 6 (I think). Any thoughts on unRAID case options? SW2 Link to comment

One has two P/S in it and a nearly full set of drives, the other uses Supermicro 5in3 cages and a single P/S. Both cases are EASY to work with, don't have tons of sharp edges, and cool well. When it came time to buy a second case for my second box I didn't think twice, I bought a CM case much like the first only without the second P/S mount inside. They aren't dirt cheap but they also do not fall apart or cut me when I work inside them. I bought them for the long haul not for something I'd only be using a year. Link to comment
sirwired Posted February 10, 2008 Share Posted February 10, 2008 One thing to consider is that the CoolerMaster Stacker is meant to be a case that holds a huge pile of drives. Not so much the P182, which I think is geared more towards the gamer crowd. This means that there will be a lot of airflow dedicated to cooling the CPU and PCI-e slots. But in your case, the CPU will barely be drawing anything, and you won't be having three power-sucking video cards in your slots. Instead, all of your heat will be coming from the front, and your hard disks will be putting out a lot more heat than any optical drive. SirWired Link to comment
Billped Posted February 10, 2008 Share Posted February 10, 2008 I have the P180, basically the same as the P182. No, it really isn't a case if all you want is a big stack of drives. Too many compartments, for example. I like it, but not as an unraid case. Since I need to build a new desktop system anyway, I will repurpose the P180 to my new desktop and will buy a true server case (big, empty space is all I need). Bill Link to comment

Per their site, version 0702 has support for the celeron 420 cpu. http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5B-VM%20DO You may (or may not - I don't know for sure) need another cpu to boot and update the bios to 0702. I went ahead and got the extra SATA Card beucase I think I have access to a pile of 300-400 GB SATA's that I might bump my initial setup to 10 Drives, but will have to see. They should work really well in that Stacker case you've ordered. I recommend tagging each end of your sata cables (port #) before you plug them all in. Its easier to trace wires later. Thanks for the tip... I just printed a bunch of labels for the SATA Cables as well as for for the front of the trays to try to keep everything neat and organized... I'm just impatiently waiting for all my stuff to arrive... MB Showed up yesterday, and I have the drives (most of em) and everything else is intransit. Link to comment
