August 6, 201114 yr Friends, I am really stuck... Suddenly I am not able to install packages from the package manager. I get the following error in RED when I select any package ... "MD5 of existing downloaded file NOT matched - download may be corrupted or download URL no longer valid" If I click on the download link I am able to download the package on my PC. I then tried copying the package file in my "Packages" directory on my Unraid Flash drive. I sill get the below error when I click on re download. --2011-08-06 20:14:02-- http://repository.slacky.eu/slackware-12.1/utilities/bwm-ng/0.6/bwm-ng-0.6-i486-2bj.tgz Resolving repository.slacky.eu... failed: Name or service not known. wget: unable to resolve host address `repository.slacky.eu' And this is happening in almost any poackage i try to install. What has suddenly gone worng. The only recent change I did was to port fw 21 on my router so as to access the ftp from internet. I was successfully able to do it and I then went to pkg manager to install SSH to try to make FTP secure and thats when I started getting the above issue ...... Please assist on this Regards Sammy

Please assist on this Regards Sammy It indicates you do not have the DNS nameserver defined, or you do not have the gateway defined on your server. What happens when you log in via telnet, or on the console and type: net lookup repository.slacky.eu and ping -c 5 repository.slacky.eu
August 6, 201114 yr Author seems I was having lots of problems, I was not able to install the Unmenu Updates as well........... was giving errors. I was not able to send a test mail to my mail ID, as well ........something told me the server needs a restart ......, well I restarted my NAS and all went well. Was able to install the package as well and mail also went successfully. But this is no solution is this???. I dont know about others but I do not plan to start my NAS so frequently. It is a 24x7 running machine. Or is there a recommendation to restart the NAS with UNraid every 24/48 hours so as to avoid such inconsistencies ......?? Anyways since you are here can you pleaseee also help me in understanding how to use SSH to secure my ftp traffic via internet (which also after a looong troubleshooting finally started working), Plus I am waiting for you solution to my post on "not able to view ftp files" thread as well which is discussed here. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2138.msg136771#msg136771 I know lots of queries but all are genuine and only are places after my through search on lime tech and google. Appreciate you assistance here. Thanks in advance Regards Sammy
August 6, 201114 yr Author I dont understand, is it my queries or my location that I do not get any response. Shouldnt be my queries coz I have seen quite a few posts that have much basic questions than what I have and who have got far better response than what I am getting ... ........ I dont know maybe I am thinking too much ......
August 6, 201114 yr I dont understand, is it my queries or my location that I do not get any response. Shouldnt be my queries coz I have seen quite a few posts that have much basic questions than what I have and who have got far better response than what I am getting ... ........ I dont know maybe I am thinking too much ...... I can't talk for others, but for me you are trying to run before you can walk. You apparently refuse to answer the questions in my prior post, so why would I invest more time when you do not want to participate in figuring the solution. As far as remote FTP access, I will not help. I've never used SSH to access my server remotely, and I am certain you will never get it to be secure, so I do not want to give advice that might leave you open to attack. I know I'll get ti wrong since I have no expertise in that area. Remember, there is ONLY one solution that is completely secure from the web, and that is not outside access. Any other solution is prone to error, and if you cannot figure out a DNS server, or network gateway, you'll NEVER get secure FTP to be secure. As far as I can see, you have apparently cut yourself off from the outside world, but now you are complaining because you are cut off. Sorry, but you need to step back a few steps. Step 1 to get help... when someone asks you to perform a test on your server, unless they are asking something you think is harmful, supply the output of the requested command. If you think it will be harmful, say so, but don't complain about no help when you do not give the information requested. Joe L.
August 6, 201114 yr Oh yes, if you've opened up port 21 through your router to the outside world, you've probably already been hacked. I sincerely hope you have strong passwords on ALL accounts. Joe L.

I apologize to be a bit blunt, blame my frustration, but the only reason I did not run the commands you suggested was coz I already had rebooted the server and all was well there after. Intentions were never to neglect what you suggested. About trying to run before I walk ....... well believe it or not .... I am totally new to the Linux world, and even new to technicalities of network, but I am a god damm pretty fast learner and prior to installing unraid I had absolute no idea about this OS, port forwarding, SSH or what ever, and no body helped me out of my queries, but I still managed to successfully install and configure Unraid and also was able to port fw 21 for my ftp access from internet. (thanks to Google Uncle) (apparently that took a lot of effort as my router is behind an ADSL modem which itself acts as a router, so passing traffic through both from outside was much more then just fwing the port 21 )...... anyway, I still apologize if I was a bit straight. About my account being hacked, I am not using the full version of Unraid currently (though I am planning to..........as and when I move ahead in building up the NAS further) so I do not have users created so no user level security, but yes I do have a strong pass for my root account. I dont think its been hacked yet, else syslog must have shown something right .. .... I know nothing can be totally secure, (I already have carefully and completely read your THIS thread) but I am willing to take certain risk, but definitely with as much security as I can levy from my end. I will research on SSH more and SSL as well so that accessing the web interface becomes a bit secure as well, and would try to contribute here what ever I accomplish. I hope I have some support from you and the fellow members here. One last query,(for now ) to view files form ftp I have to run the below two commands every time a new file or folder is updated on the NAS. Isnt there a permanent solution for this, so that I do not have to run the commands every time I copy files or create foldesr on Unraid ... find /mnt/user -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \; find /mnt/user -type f -exec chmod 700 {} \; Also for some reason (I presume permissions) though I can upload on the Unraid ftp, but if I try to download I get the error .... [8/7/2011 5:08:54 PM] 550 Permission denied. [8/7/2011 5:08:54 PM] Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access). Thanks and I really appreciate that you took time to show me the way and assist. Regards Sammy
August 7, 201114 yr Author Well I figured the last part ...... Also for some reason (I presume permissions) though I can upload on the Unraid ftp, but if I try to download I get the error .... [8/7/2011 5:08:54 PM] 550 Permission denied. [8/7/2011 5:08:54 PM] Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access). I ran the same command but with permissions 777. find /mnt/user -type d -exec chmod 777 {} \; find /mnt/user -type f -exec chmod 777 {} \; which allowed me to download the files as well. This might help some, who stumbles upon this thread. Regards Sammy

You've made every file readable writable, and executable by anybody. Think of it like parking your car in the worst neighborhood you know, with all the windows open and doors unlocked, keys in the ignition, and putting a sign on the windshield "please don't steal my valuables, I'll only be gone for a few weeks." This has nothing to do with MD5's of files though, so if you expect somebody to find it as their solution, they are not likely. Please start another thread for this subject in the appropriate forum. In this case, it would depend upon the version of unRAID you are using. If the new beta, where permission issues are still being changed and fixed, post there in the announcement thread. Joe L.
