Share set up

Featured Replies

Hi just wondering how you all have your shares set up, currently rebuilding my array after starting again and want to get this right as I think I have made enough mistakes in the past with tinkering with the shares, this will be the final build, so follow what the unraid forums say and have separate shares for your different types of files (movies,tv,music) and the like, or use ibracorps with data/media/movies. Data/media tv. Data/media/music type setup ?
Thanks

There is no one solution that fits all users or cases.  Only you know how your mind organizes things.  Stop, think and analyses how you want things in your life organized.

If you tend to always want to see the big picture as your primary view, you want the single share approach with sub-directories for various categories.

If you prefer things to be in separate 'containers' in your mind, you would probably want separate shares.   (This how I ran my life before I retired.  In fact, I had things so organized/compartmentalized that I would never realize when I had two separate events-- one in my personal life and one in my business life --scheduled in conflict with one another!  SO you know now how I have my file system setup! )

One important consideration is that Unraid can only control access at the share level.  This means that you can't control file access (no access, read-only, read-write) to certain parts of any share for a specific user or users.   User access rights apply to the entire share.  This is probably the strongest case for not going with the single share setup.
