ChodeMaximus 120TB - Aliexpress "Jank"

Recommended Posts

Absolutely loved my Jasper Lake routers from Ali-Express, so why not build a Jasper Lake NAS? A bit adventurous perhaps, but lots of fun and low power usage compared to other cpu's.

High levels of "JANK" in this gallery, first time builders probably want to seek inspiration elsewhere. If you don't mind going ham, perhaps there is some inspiration for you here.

Cpu: Intel N5105

Mem: 16GB 3200MHz CL22

Network: 4x 2.5Gbit Intel i226-V

Controller: JMB585

Hard Drives: 6x 20TB Exos X20
Case: Enthoo Evolv ITX

PSU: Phanteks Revolt SFX 750W 80+ Platinum

It's used solely to store big MKV's, so cache isn't necessary. It does however have two "Single Lane" Nvme Slots.
The build time was 26 hours & 27 minutes. Average speed: 210.0 MB/s with two 20tb parities.

No problem with transfer speeds either, almost maxes out the 2.5gbit.

Enthoo Evolv ITX, Jonsbo N1 order was unexpectedly canceled. Didn't have the time to wait, so took what i had!

Hard drive Cage zip-tied down in all corner, hard drive cage bottom got hard rubber so it's really snug.

120TB

Reminds me of those Lian-Li mini itx cases that are impossible to get a hold off.

Native Sata Port = Parity 1
JMB585 Sata Port 1 = Parity 2

Still Place for two more hard drives, that could be handled by JMB585 nvme slot controller cards.

Mandatory test

Everything has been running really stable without any issues for a week now, it's just as fast as my 2600x B550 rig at transfer speeds on the the 2.5gbit network.

Much love!

That's a very interesting build - maybe I should try something like this rather than trying to add some horrible homemade DAS to my current server. So tidy as well, compared to my cable mess! Do you need a 750W PSU? I'm running 10 hard disks off a 650W Corsair PSU. Not criticising - just budgeting 🙂

It's been a long time since I last looked for a PSU. Having looked around, I now realise it's actually a little difficult to get the lower wattage PSUs, at least where I am.

If where you are is Earth, this is quite true.  I went through the same recently, looking for a PSU for my backup server.  A Ryzen 1500X clocked down to about half speed (no Docker or VM, it's just a NAS for a couple hours a month) and 3 rust drives.  I could have realistically run the system on a 150W PSU.

Looking for a half decent, known brand 450W ATX PSU, choices were really limited.  Some unheard of brands with barely a Bronze 80 rating were sub $100.  Expanding my search to higher capacity, I ended up buying a 550W Thermaltake PSU.  Much more than I wanted, but fit my budget requirements.

If you take a look at this post you'll see the most-recommended power supplies for low loads. Spoiler alert, you either go to a Corsair RM550x, a BeQuiet Pure Power 12 FM 550W or a PicoPSU (for the highest efficiencies). Even premium PSUs (gold or platinum ratings) can have very low loads efficiency as the advertised efficiency is measured at a minimum load of 20% (which for a typical 550W PSU is way higher than what the system will typically idle at).

Gold rated PSUs are not considered premium anymore.

The Titanium rating includes a requirement for 90% efficiency at 10% of rated load.

The newest ATX 3.0 compliant PSU's will have efficiency above 60% at 10W or 2% of rated load.

70% is a recommendation.

PSU was intended for a Jonsbo that got canceled, the Phanteks was on sale and was modular/platinum and had enough Sata Cables. Decided to use my old Evolve ITX case, that could take ATX size PSU's. Bit of a double mess up.

Very interesting. What's the power consumption at idle? Preferably with HDD sleeping to make it more comparable.

With disks spun down around 18-19watts, that's with two fans 140mm/200mm and the aliexpress power brick. Had to turn on c-states in the bios, they were off by default. Still seem like a bit to much, my n6005 idles around 13-14watts.
