Drives getting hot during SMART extended test

Featured Replies

Hi

unraid newbie here. I just ran an extended SMART test on my two seagate ironwolf 8TB drives sitting in the basement drive cage of an MSI mag 112R case. The drives ran at about 50 degrees for the entire 10 hours so it seems like they can't remain in their current position. The problem is that the case only has 2 x 3.5 bays both sandwiched on top of each other at the bottom of the case. I don't have a graphics card so there is still a fair bit of space, is there another way to mount drives not using the drive cage? Or does it not matter that they became hot during the SMART test, since the test is designed to stress the drives?

Thanks in advance

The test won't stress the drives any more than parity check does, and parity check will do them all at the same time. So you need to deal with your cooling.

Ok thanks, any advice on how to mount the drives in the free space of my case? There are only two 3.5 inch bays on top of each other at the bottom of the case. Can i just leave one hanging free within the free space of the case?

Exactly what i was looking for, thanks. I was looking up 'drive enclosures' before and couldn't find them
