February 13, 200818 yr Through this forum, I learned to avoid Realtek gigabit network chipset. That's why I build a system on Asus p5k-vm do with Intel network chip set. Everything appear to be working and I can copies data to the unRaid server. But when I tried to access it back through other machines, including a vista media center and windows xp, I encounter all sorts of problem, including: - streaming video pauses through vista media center - access user share directory prompt me to enter password for user guest - can't access user share directory at all - can't read the file back from the server if it is doing write operation to another disc. unRaid 4.1 seems to be more stable in my machine compare to 4.21. But not 100% sure. unRaid 4.0 don't support both my network card and the JMicron SATA chipset. SO I can't really use it. I think this is something to do with the network card. Any thought?
February 13, 200818 yr JMicron SATA drivers work fine for me with UnRAID 4.0 (on an ABit AB9 Pro board), but you have to set it to use AHCI in the BIOS. The drivers will not work if the controller is set to IDE mode.
February 15, 200818 yr Author The problem I was having is nothing to do with the network card because similar problem stilll happen after usea Dlink PCI gigabit network card. The problem is either related to AHCI setting for my SATA drive and/or user security. I want test few more days and make sure the server is completely stablized before I continue isolated the problem. I assume AHCI should improve the disk performance especially on concurrent user operation. Performance of UNRAID server at this stage is still not as fast as what I am hoping for. If am using my Vista machine to copy whole bunch of tiles to the UNRAID server while reading DVD quality video at the same time, the DVD video can't play smoothly. Also, through this network card experience, I can telll PCI-E based Intel gigabit network card is much faster than the PCI based Dlink card. By using vmstat on UNRAID server's telnet section, I can see a lot more I/O wait compare on DLink card, which make perfect sense toe me. Yet, I really hope I can optimize the server for better performance.
February 15, 200818 yr If am using my Vista machine to copy whole bunch of tiles... There's your problem! Have you tried the DLink network card with XP? Vista is known to have a number of problems that affect file copying speed. http://www.google.com/search?q=vista+file+copying+slow If am using my Vista machine to copy whole bunch of tiles to the UNRAID server while reading DVD quality video at the same time, the DVD video can't play smoothly. This really isn't surprising at all, some people can't even play music and copy files at the same time on Vista. I wouldn't use Vista as a benchmark for unRAID performance with all the network/audio problems it has. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=vista+network+audio+slow
