[Build & Set up Advice] Supermicro 846 EPYC 7313 PLEX - Storage Build

Featured Replies

Looking for some opinions/thoughts on a Home server build.

Main use case:

Plex, music, movies, tv shows etc. (I have lifetime plex pass)

Radarr, Sonarr, Prowlarr, Tautulli, qbittorrent (if anything else for the plex setup please let me know)

May try to get into setting up vms etc. ( I like tinkering, plex started for me with a pc build for gaming then to have snyology ds1817+ and 1815+ from my business/home and now going full rackmount build). However, as of right now just an overbuilt plex server/media manager, and replace the ds 1817+ (which will be used as a 3rd redundant back up offsite)

Will more than likely use some bays for Work storage of PDFS, Excels, Word Docs that I would like to be in direct sync with synology machines mentioned above which will be replaced with another rackmount build in the future. (when I work out the kinks)

What I have currently:

- Supermicro 846 Case (24 bay hot swap) w/ BPN-SAS2-846EL1 SAS Expander, 2x SQ 1k watt powersupplies

- HBA card that came with the case - BPN-SAS2-846EL

- Supermicro 6-Inch 16Pin Front Control Split Cable (CBL-0084L)

- EPYC 7313 CPU

- 2x 14tb Iron Wolf Pros

- 2x 8tb Iron Wolf Pros

SC 846 120 Fan Shroud Wall Replacement

- 3x 120mm Noctua Industrial Fans

- 2x 80mm Noctua fans

Supermicro H12SSL-NT-O MOBO

Arctic Freezer 4U SP3 CPU Cooler - This requires the 80mm fans to be mounted on the outside of the case

Nemix ECC Unbuffered DDR4-3200mhz RAM 8x16gb - to use all 8 slots (read this was best practice)

Looking to buy and asking for any info on the below:

- SSDs (2 slots on mobo for Nvme m.2)  for a cache

           - How much do I need? plex server isnt that large now but will grow once this is completed.

           - 1 or 2? in raid or not?

- USB needed for Unraid

          - What size?

- Ram Question

          - Is the 128gb of Ram enough for ram transcoding?

- GPU Question

          - P5000, P4000, RTX 4000 - what would you go with here? Is it necessary? (PS I know intel quicksync would be more economical but i wanted something with more pcie lanes and allow for expansion)

- Raid Type

          - What raid type is best for plex and the storage for my business docs (excel, pdfs, word) Currently running SHR on synology.

- VPN

         - Currently running Mullvad VPN can that be brought over to this set up?

Your help is greatly appreciated!
