Can't seem to be able to wipe the array and start over

Featured Replies

I've been testing my hardware for about ten days trying multiple configurations with an array of about 5 HDD's 1 NVME cache and a backup 512GB cache. All was working for a few days and then I started renaming cache drives and moving stuff around, getting acquainted really with the OS, and trying to optimize speed as I'm used to a Synology NAS which seems to outpace this solution.

Box was working wonderfully for a few days but I've been trying to start over now and I cannot get the drives to format. One 12TB drive in specific is giving me problems and won't format properly. keep saying it's unmountable and the ID keep switching from "sdc" to "sci". no idea what I maybe done here.

what's the best way to wipe it all and start clean? I've pre cleared drives and done the new config options but I cannot get these order.

TIA!

I just tried inserting one drive at a time and formatting each individually since my mono supports hot swap and when I try to start the array I get this:

Jun 8 16:59:17 Vault kernel: ata5.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x1 SErr 0x400100 action 0x6 frozen
Jun 8 16:59:17 Vault kernel: ata5.00: irq_stat 0x08000000, interface fatal error

The syslog you listed shows that when you tried to format a drive (sac) it would get an I/O error and drop offline.    It was then re-connecting with a different Id.    This suggests that either that drive really does have a problem or the power and/or SATA cabling to the drive have an issue.

thank you very much for your response. I have no idea what to look for yet as I'm new to Unraid but I do know that this board is close to a decade old and I ran it for years before retiring it for something more transcoding friendly so it wouldn't surprise me if the hardware is unstable. was really just putting together a backup server out of leftover used parts. I've got 20 days, give or take left on this trial and I'll be buying a license for sure. Lets see how much more time this box has left in it.

For the time being I switched to other SATA ports on the board. This board has 12 onboard SATA ports but with 3 separate controller. Some are Intel and others MarvelI, and I know folks favor Intel over others as Marvell is usually considered to be trash but this board seems more reliable on the Marvell side. Also have to factor in my case which I think is even older and so the backplane on that could simply be too old to handle this.

Thanks again for pinpointing.
