Server Randomly Shutting Down

Featured Replies

Hi,

Recently my server has started shutting down at random times. Sometimes when I restart it, it shows that there was an unclean shutdown. Other times it restarts and appears as if it never shut down. The uptime will show as though the shut down never happened. This server is about 10 years old now, so I'm guessing it's some sort of hardware problem. I'm an amateur when it comes to this though and don't understand how to check the diagnostics to see if says what's happening. Would somebody mind taking a look for me? Thanks in advance!

Setup syslog server

Thanks for checking this, I'll look into your suggestions above.

It's been a busy month and I'm just getting back to this now. I took the steps above but the server continues to shutdown on its own. I replaced the psu in case that was causing an issue but nothing has changed. Attached is the syslog and diagnostics

In addition to the shutdowns, my parity drive has also disappeared. 2 startups ago it became disabled and then on the most recent startup it wasn't found. The slot shows unassigned and it doesn't appear in the drop down. Really not sure what do about all of this. I have some time to work on this this weekend so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm not saying this will solve your issue at all but I did purchase, put together, and install a PiKVM.  I was having some random issues, and I'm not home very much, so it was very hard to diagnose what it could be. Turns out my issue is a bad USB key.  But what was great is that even with unraid having crashed, so I couldn't pulled any diagnostic, I was able to pull up the piKVM and see the error codes there.  If you're sitting next to your server and have a monitor on it then that's great but for me it's been a life saver. Luckily I don't have any errors to show at the moment but here's a current screenshot of it.

Did you setup the syslog server as asked? Though server shutting down on its own usually points to a hardware problem.

Yes, I believe I did it correctly. Is the .zip file I attached on Saturday the correct output for it?

The syslog you posted is the same that comes in the diags, not the persistent syslog.

Ok, I think I'm attaching the correct one now. Thanks!

Yes, I believe so. It was off when I woke up this morning.

Nothing logged.

Have you done memtest recently?

Do you have an UPS?

Yes, but the server wasn't plugged into it at this time. I had removed it from the UPS to see if that was possibly the issue.

I've never done a memtest. I'll lookup how to do that and will run it.

Also try uninstalling the S3 Sleep plugin.

I completed the memtest and everything passed. I also uninstalled the S3 Sleep plugin as recommended and my server has now been up for 10 days, which is great.

I uninstalled this and so far the server has stayed on for 10 days now. I'm afraid to say it's fixed but so far so good. Now I just need to figure out what happened to my parity drive.

Swap cables (power and SATA) with different disk and re-test, if it still doesn't show up it could be dead.
