Adding a 2nd Cache Disk

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

i installed a 2nd SSD to my Server.

The first Cachepool was a 250Gb SSD and I always ran out of Space.

So I ordered and already installed a 1TB SSD.

But how do i configure the new disk without data loss?

I was naive enough to think, i just add the disk to the pool and everything works out so i have 1,25TB.

It turns out its not that easy.

When ich add the new disk to the Cache pool, a red warning comes up that says, if I do it that way, all data on my old Cachedisk will be overwritten.

Well I dont want that.

What do I do?

edit:

i just saw, that the warning is just for the new disk, do i get that right?

So if i just add the new one to the pool, unraid will format only the new drive?

Correct, I assume current pool was btrfs? If yes it will default to raid1, to use the full pool capacity (without redundancy) you then need to convert the pool to single profile.

thank you for helping me out here.

Glad u guys and this forum exist, otherwise a layman like me would no longer be able to cope with this kind of stuff.

Back to topic, I'm thinking it could be wise to have 2 seperate cache pools, right?

One for my Docker (thats why my old pool was constantly full) and one for my other Shares.

Should i do that?

That way i dont risk all data on both drives, bcoz the old one doesn't interfere with the new one...

It's up to you, both options are valid, but yeah, 2nd pool might be better.

Now I have the next Problem.

I created a 2nd Pool, now the new disk is unmountable and the format button is grey.

I set the file System on the new Cache disk drive to btrfs.

Maybe its doin something in the background, i cant see?

There should be a "Yes, I want to do this" box below the format button, what Unraid release? Also post the diagnostics.

Release: Version: 6.11.5

I know that checkbox, but it doesnt appear on my system...

when i stop the paritycheck after starting the array, my server wont show disks etc and is loading till nirvana...

Try rebooting in safe mode, and if you are using Firefox try a different browser.

u think that will help with the unmountable problem?

bcoz the other probslems are gone after 15mins of wating.

Using Chrome...

It may help, your GUI is not working correctly, if it's plugin related safe mode will help, though most likely it won't help, and if it doesn't there's a more serious issue.

in safe mode its the same issue... :(

I know it's an old topic, but I'd like to be sure about what I want to do in a couple of days.

So right now, as You can see below I have one Cache Drive (nvme one) which is set up for appdata, and system.

The second SSD drive "Cache_ssd) is only for data - when it's almost full it is moved to my main array disks.

I've ordered new (the same model and capacity as the first cache_ssd) drive to have IN TOTAL 4TB of available space for new data.

The problem is that I don't want to move now files that are now stored on Cache_ssd.

As I already checked this drive its in mode:

Data, single: total=1.46TiB, used=1.46TiB
System, DUP: total=8.00MiB, used=176.00KiB
Metadata, DUP: total=2.00GiB, used=1.63GiB
GlobalReserve, single: total=512.00MiB, used=0.00B

So, my question is, If I be able to add second exactly the same SSD drive to installed one WITHOUT losing my data?

Cache_ssd is in BTRFS format.

Thanks.

If nothing goes wrong yes, you just add to the pool and start the array, initially it will be balanced to raid1, but you can cancel and balance to raid0, if you want to use the full capacity without redundancy.

Thank You for Your answer.

Just to be sure, will there be an option to choose RAID0 mode, or how it will be possible to set it up?
