I swapped the HBA to the 8x pcie from the 4x, although it opperates at 4x, so I'm not 100% sure that was the issue, and maybe a restart did it good.

Usually it is enough to stop the parity check, wait some time (no idea how long, I wait at least an hour or so) and start it again.

Seems that UNRAID sometimes is doing some background jobs that interfere seriously with the check. These are surpressed if the check is already running, but when started at a "wrong" time they still collide and slow down each other.

Does not happen too often but still sometimes. And it is usually harmless and can be solved with a stop.

Unraid driver crashed in the first diags, this is usually a hardware issue, or some kernel/hardware compatibility problem.
