bwperez Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I suspect I've just really messed up. I was building a new unraid server and moved drives to it. I started up and it said too many drives missing so i ran initconfig and restarted. I was then able to mount all the drives but two show unformatted. 5 of the other drives show up just fine and still have data but those two don't mount and don't show up using yarg. Am I out 4T of data or is there some other way to fix or recover the data? How about pay services? Anything? I'm running unraid 4.7 on the new unraid server. These drives were from another 4.7 server while the other drives were from a 4.5.4 version of unraid. Brian
bwperez Posted August 21, 2011 Author Posted August 21, 2011 Does anybody have any suggestions at all? If all hope is lost I will have learned a very hard lesson about backups. Many of the files are pictures which my wife informed me she has been deleting from her laptop once they were copied over. I'm willing to pay well for assistance or a service if anybody can recommend one that is good and has experience with unraid. Brian

Brian send an e-mail to tomm@lime-technology Those that do not mount might have file-system corruption, or they might just be replaying their journels after a non-clean shut=down. That can take up to 20 minutes or more on a large disk.. Or, they might have had the MBR improperly set to start on sector 64. only way to know is to see a syslog. data recovery from reiserfs has been remarkable, so odds of recovery is good. Unfortunately, running initconfig immediately invalidated any parity you might have had previously calculated, so it cannot help. You must fix the file-systems. Joe L. Joe L.
SSD Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 I can only say do not give up yet. Do not write to any of your disks until you have given Tom and the community time to consider the best course of action. I think you have a good chance of recovering much of your lost data.
bwperez Posted August 24, 2011 Author Posted August 24, 2011 Thanks for the encouraging feedback. I sent an email to Tom on Saturday but I haven't heard back yet. By having the drives sit unused at least I'm not making things any worse :-) Brian
bwperez Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 Sorry to open up a very old thread but I wanted to get some final advice. I was fortunately able to restore all but a few hundred pictures from backups on my computer and a second unraid server. I used a recovery tool on my windows server "Raise Data Recovery for ReiserFS V5.2 and it allowed me to confirm what was on the drive. However, all the jpg, DVD VIdEO_TS folders, and zip files report invalid or corrupted. The interesting thing is mpg files and the vobs in the video_ts folders are all playable. I get the impression that something at the start of all the files are messed up. Could the MRB starting on sector 64 cause this? Is there any way to check how it is set and to set it the other way to see how the drive behaves? If anybody can spare some time to help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Brian
