[SOLVED] Brand new unraid install... formatting takes too long?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Just recently got an unraid setup. I installed 5 disks in the computer, all brand new and completely without format. I choose a parity disk and 4 data disks, and then clicked format and start. The party disk built over 8-9 hours, but the formatting never finished. After the parity finished rebuilding, all the disks spun down while the disks still show formatting status. I can not stop the array via unmenu and no indications of progress on the format are in syslog.

I have attached a complete syslog, and a screenshot of the main console. I'm happy to back out at this point and run preclear_disk.sh manually before formatting (so it happens fast), but I don't want to damage anything backing out at this point. If I force umount all these disks and reboot, then run preclear_disk.sh, will everything just work?

Note lots of other random stuff is mixed in here as I was setting up the time, trying to add shares, etc. The relevant part of the log is

FWIW, I ended up running the powerdown script after umounting all the drives. This time, they showed up as unformatted, but formatted very quickly (5-10 minutes). I'm rsyncing 2.2TB of data to the array now to see if all is well. Still not sure exactly what happened the first time -- maybe mkfs for reiser is sensitive to time jumps? (the clock jumped from UTC to PDT when I was setting up the server).
