Hi,

 

just wanted to ask if its that necessary to pre clear the drives.

all of the drives been in use. 3xWD20EARS, and 4xWD1000FYPS.

    It is necessary and I would not advise trying to circumvent it.

    A feature of the preclear is to write 0's to every sector, which has the benefit of remapping bad sectors on write.

    In addition it allows the drive to be added into the array without recalculating parity for the whole array again.
