Dual parity drive swap clarification

Featured Replies

So Unraid (6.12.2) is currently reporting one of my current parity drives as having smart errors (even though a short test passes).  I have 8 WD 8TB mybook drives total (2 parity, 6 data).  Given their age, I am going to take the opportunity to replace and expand the array with 8 Ironwolf Pro 22TB drives (I like space LOL).  From what I've gathered, the replacement process seems fairly straightforward.  To clarify and check my sanity, this is how I am seeing it done:

  1. Stop the array.
  2. Unassign the parity drive with errors.
  3. Shut down NAS, replace with 22TB drive.
  4. Power on NAS, assign 22TB drive as parity, start the array and rebuild.
  5. Rinse, repeat for second 22TB drive.

For the data drives, do they also need to be replaced 1 by 1 or can I replace them all once the array is rebuilt with the two 22TB parity drives?

You can skip this step.

With dual parity you can replace two drives at the same time, you can also replace both parity drives at the same time, but array will be unprotected during any dual device replacement.

Thanks.  I'll probably just play it safe and replace one at a time.

I have a similar question on this topic.

I am running Dual Parity with 10TB drives and all my data drives are 10TB.  One of my data drives needs to be replaced but I only have 2 x 16 TB drives for replacement.

Do I have to replace BOTH parity drives before I can start upgrading the capacity of the data drives to 16TB drives?  OR can I upgrade 1 parity drives with the 16TB drive and then upgrade the failing data drive with the other 16TB drive?

What would be the recommended procedure in my case?

Yes.
