WD 3TB Drives

Featured Replies

I have just built a new UnRaid server running 5.0beta9. I have 3TB Hitachi 5400RPM CoolSpin drives for parity and a couple of data drives.

The WD 3TB drives are a lot cheaper and easier to source here in the UK - I recently bought one and have precleared it, but I am hesitant to add it to my array as I have heard there may be problems with these drives.

Has anyone done any testing of WD 3TB drives with UnRaid? Are they ok to use?

People here are pretty fond of Hitachi drives.  Only one user has tried a WD 3T drive, and he had trouble.  But one person with one drive is not very much evidence.  It could have been a problem with his setup, or a bad drive, or a bad cable, etc.  Would be very helpful to the community here if others would try out the WD offerings and report back with results.

Building new server with 3TB drives on a unRAID beta? I wouldn't take such chance. I'm waiting patiently for a new stable release so I can eventually upgrade to finally get 3TB support. I believe 3TB support should have been ready in a stable version months ago. I have to grow very soon. If unRAID doesn't come out with stable release with 3TB support I may have to look at alternatives and I don't want to.

For some reason, the 3TB Hitachi Green drives are not available bare in the UK.

It's still cheaper to buy a 3TB Hitachi Green USB drive and pull it open for the drive than to buy a WD 3TB drive. I'm waiting for Hitachi to put out the Green drive on its own.

  • 2 weeks later...

Also in the uk myself, upgraded parity to wd 3tb , been running for about a week (though not much saving/reading from the drive tbh) running beta 12.

Will be adding another 3tb drive as data in the next few weeks then will be able to test fully.

i am currently pleclearing a WD 3TB that i got in from Newegg.

I just built a new server using unRAID 5.0B12a and 9 - 3TB drives. So far it is working great, and there is no problem with it supporting those new larger drives. I am currently moving 16TB of video files over to the new build. I will of course be keeping my old server for a while as a fall back just in case I run into trouble. But I do not see that happening.

  • 1 year later...

I'm looking to buy 3 of the following:

http://www.ebuyer.com/260668-wd-3tb-green-desktop-drive-wd30ezrx

Anyone recommend against them or suggest a better alternative?

I'm based in the UK

No problems with my 3TB WD in use for almost a year. Hitachi drives are going to start disappearing soon. WD bought them 8 months or so ago.
