Advice on large (Un)RAID build

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I've been interested in Unraid for a while and just started a free trial to test it out. I've come into a stack of Powervault MD1200s and want to build out a large amount of storage for a write-light, read-heavy workflow. Currently, I have 8x 10TB and 12x 6TB HDDs, with another 8x 4TB drives to be added later (one of the reasons Unraid looks so attractive). Putting all of that into the array, it would be something around 150TiB after using 2x 10TBs as parities. Multiple (2 or 3) 1TB SSDs will make up the cache pool.

Is this too big for the array to be practical? What will read performance look like? Do I have better options for configuration within Unraid? Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Nope.

It will be the max read speed of the disk at the position you are reading from, typically from around 200MB/s to 100MB/s for modern disks if reading from faster outer tracks or the slower inner tracks.
