Baron_Harkonnen Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 hi, ive done it many times, everytime i open more than 1 preclear sessions at a time - unraid would restart after couple of hours. now iam trying to preclear 1 disk at a time with -n option (without pre\post reads) - will see where it gets me. but anyway if someone might have idea why it crashes pleas let me know. iam runnung unraid 4.7, preclear version 1.12, 3x 2tb wd ears drives, on asus maximus formula motherboard. thanks!
Baron_Harkonnen Posted August 26, 2011 Author Posted August 26, 2011 ok, unraid reboots after couple of hours even when preclearing 1 disk at the time....i gues no unraid for me then
prostuff1 Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 This is not an unRAID problem, you have a hardware problem somewhere. Run memtest on the system for a least 8 hours. Also check the BIOS to make sure the memory timings where set correct in the first place. We could also use a syslog to help figure out the problem. Also try doing a tail -f /var/log/sysog from a telnet prompt while the server is running.
S80_UK Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 I have to agree - this sounds very much like hardware. Could be RAM, power supply, timings or voltage settings (should be at defaults). Worst case it could be external interference, but that seems unlikely. unRAID 4.7 is very stable indeed (up times are in months and generally limited by the need to power down for other reasons), and the preclear scripts are widely used without problems.
technojunkie Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Also watch your syslog. I am having an issue currently with drives attached to my SASLP-MV8 and within minutes of beginning preclear, the syslog is over 1 GB and my server runs out of RAM. At that point oom-killer starts killing processes like ssh, smbd, and ultimately the preclear script.
Baron_Harkonnen Posted August 27, 2011 Author Posted August 27, 2011 hi, thanks for all the support! i would like to ask some more questions - is it possible to access the log after reboot? (i did the 'tail -f /var/log/syslog' command, I've seen some output, but it looks like its new log (after restart - judging by the time stamps). if so, how, and how can i port it to txt file? (I'm sorry, but I'm new to command lining. i did find a tutorial about commands in general, but i'd be great full if someone could tell me what to write, because I'm not comfortable with command lining by myself yet... some update - i reset my bios (return to default), and configured them again, and hopefully it did the trick! i managed to pre clear (-A -n) 1 drive! 7 hours - no restarts! pre clearing the other 2 now... regarding the bad sectors thing (since i skipped them during pre clear) - is it possible to check for bad sectors after pre clear ? so if something goes wrong i won't loose the pre clear on that drive? another thing - general question about navigating thru manuals - when i write ./preclear_disk.sh -? it outputs the manual, but i can't navigate thru it! pg-up pg-dwn only cycle thru the list of commands i already typed, the same goes for arrow up/down. i just see the end of the manual and can't move up or down....tried every button!. regarding the memtest - how can i assure that it runs at least 8 hours? (does it runs on loop or something? or is there a command?) is there a log output for mentest? (sorry i don't really understand what it does, and did not find much info on the net...so i don't even know if there suppose to be a log...or something...)
dgaschk Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 See here for syslog info: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=9880.0 You can enter: "./pre-clear -? | more" memtest will run until you stop it.
