ftp sevice

Featured Replies

how hard would it be to add ftp servce to the server?  would it be a faster way to transfer data?

I would love to have the ftp service available.  My parents could then back up their computers to my server for offsite storage. :)

I think it is a matter of size/space with the flash being 128 MB yes?

But man, that would just be awesome.

I guess you could technically run a windows based ftp with the shared network drives of the media server, but the overhead would just be crazy.

Has anyone done this option with decent results?

Are you thinking of putting UnRaid on a public network? With the current security model (blank root password, wide open SMB shares), that's probably not advised unless you really firewall it.

The 128 MB is NOT as limiting as you might expect.

First, because UNIX/Linux allows executables to be in any directory and symbolically linked to its usual directory. Additional programs can reside on any drive, not just the flash drive.  With that in mind, these "packages" we add can exist on disk1, or disk2, or disk3, etc...  Lots of room for the package itself.  We are limited because we do not have a "swap" drive and everything must run in "ram" at the same time, but we could probably work that issue, even if simply by adding more memory.

Second, even if we do not want to use one of our data disks for program storage the compressed unRaid images on the 128Meg flash drive take less space than Tom has hinted. He said there was room for two copies of unRaid. Very true, easily, with lots of room for growth and future features. (  I can dream, can't I )    I currently have four copies of unRaid on my flash, all under the "system" folder.  I have the original release, the 315 release, the 324 release, AND the current release... ( I edited the GRUB menu file so I could boot on any of them). I also have a statically linked 71K (read larger size) copy of netcat, and I still have 15% free space on the flash drive.

Now that things are a bit more stable I'll probably delete the older releases, but only after I find myself crunched for space when Tom comes out with the next release.  Now, when Tom upgrades to the next version of Linux it will take more a bit more space, but I'll bet three compressed copies will still fit on the flash drive.

Third, flash drives are getting cheaper all the time and smaller ones getting harder to find. At some point it will be possible to supply unRaid on a 512Meg or 1Gig flash drive with very little difference in cost to Tom.  (Might even be possible for Tom to do that now, to supply unRaid on a larger drive for a small premium in price for the cost of the larger drive)

Now... as far as security, I'd like to see  a vsftp (very secure ftp) server added to the package.  Anything less and I'd be very afraid security issues.  We cannot simply open up unRaid to the outside world, if an ftp server is installed, only its port can be available through a firewall. (Not the telnet port, that's for sure)

I would like it for basic internal transfers but if I could access it from the outside world that would be great too.

  • 1 month later...

A secure FTP service would be a great feature. Sometimes I want to share some large files with friends/family and I dont want to take the space up on my website.

Any idea if its feasible to make this a reality?

I too would find this service wonderful if we can make it secure. I love to transfer files between machines using FTP vs. the copy/paste method.
