Slimserver install - tips?

I've had slimserver running on my 4.5/4.6/4.7 server for a long time, but I'm looking for pointers going forward.

 

Previously, i had slimserver running on a drive outside of the array so it could write/log/spin without keeping the parity drive spinning. About a month ago my server got really flakey and it was because my hd1 drive was failing - it is now officially dead.

 

Should i put in another old IDE drive as hd1 and get the current version of slimserver running like i had it before?

 

I see Tom has a plugin for 5.0 and he talks about a persistant drive - would this be similar to the hd1 I had before?

 

Does anyone have any suggestions?
