Very slow rebuild and errors

Featured Replies

I have changed 2 disks on my array and started a rebuild
but one of the others disks started to have errors during the rebuild and the time to rebuild is more than 100+ days

what can i do ? should i stop the rebuild ?

Looks like that disk is failing, do you still have the old disks that you are upgrading?

  • Author

yes i do have them but would it be safe to put them back ? and that would not fix the issue with the 3rd disk as it would need rebuilding again no ?

If nothing was written to the array since the new disks were installed you can try doing a new config and force disable disk2 to see if it can be rebuilt, keeping the old disk intact for now, if interested I can post detailed instructions.

should i try to do the new config with the disk that throws errors ?

You mean together with the old disks and then re-sync parity? It will likely have the same read errors.

  • Author

yes then woudnt't the parity resync take 100+ days too ?

  • Community Expert

Yes, not much point in doing that.

so then what are my option ?
letting the array rebuild for 2 months and pray ?
copy the data to another storage and rebuild the array from scratch ?
Option 3 ?

If there were writes to the array, best bet would be to clone the bad disk with ddrescue, then resync parity with the old disks 3 and 8 and the clone.

Little update the disk N°3 crashed during the rebuild and corrupted the 2 others and now i have 3 corrupted disks.
time for disaster recovery...
