skank Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 I was wondering (i never had apple products, so i'm really new into this) On apple's site, i saw "airport express" Now i was wondering if i somehow install itunes on the unraid server, and using the airport express connected to my amplifier. Can i stream music to it then using the android remote https://market.android.com/details?id=hyperfine.hftunes.release&feature=related_apps on my android phone. Some questions though.. All my mp3 files are on the server Can i install itunes on the server? Will it work without some other pc powered on? Or should i forget the whole thing and go for a squeezebox and install the squeezebox server on unraid (but this is more expensive instead of airport express) Help appreciated !
speeding_ant Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Depends.. Are there any open source Linux packages that will stream to the airport express? If not, I highly doubt you'll have any luck here. iTunes requires a Windows or Mac OS, so that's out of the question. If you don't have optical audio on the amps connected to an Airport Express, give up now. The analogue sound quality from its built in DAC is hopeless, so if you like your music then I'd be tempted to move to the Squeeze Box.

I thought, installing itunes on my windows pc... and putting the library on unraid would be enough? In that way i dont have to turn on the windows pc, but just unread, and use an android phone to control the library on unraid would work? Eisi2005 Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Hi, if you install itunes on your windows pc and the lib on unraid you must turn on your windows pc to stream your music. Because your android needs a connection to your itunes and not to the itunes lib. There is noch itunes package for unraid. So you have no chance without turn on your windows pc. Greets Eisi

Greets Eisi Ok thats a clear answer. Pity. Guess sonos or squeezebox is the only way then to play music from unraid to the amplifier without turning on tv. (and controllable by a phone)
aht961 Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 If you have iPhone (or iPad) you can use various applications to stream the Mp3 archive kept on unRaid via the Airtunes to the Airport express. The optical output of AE is superb if you use lossless Apple codec, with MP3 it is bearable. The only problem with AE is that occasionally you will have some drop outs (lasting 1-2 secs).
