WD20EARS LCC vs. Failure tracking?

Anyone keeping track of these things, longer term?

 

I had a couple WD20EARS drives well into their LCC climb before realizing it. Decided it was better to let them run their course than wdidle at the late date. Now one of them with a LCC over 220K is reallocating and throwing real errors. The other drive filled faster, is less used, and slowed its climb at an LCC under 60K.

Anyway, I thought it might be interesting if there's a larger study watching the long-term outcome of these drives with huge LCCs.

I keep forgetting to look at my LCC counts. I have quite a few EARS in one of my unRAID boxes. All of those drives came from a WHSv1 before that. 2 have already died after they went into my unraid box.

I would not be surprised if I have massive LCC's.

 

Most of my 1.5tb and 2TB drives that were purchased before 2011 are delegated to backup server use now. That would include all of my WD EARS.

Ok. It looks like I am down to 4 from my original 8 EARS in my unraid box.

2 died and 2 were repurposed (one corrupted since then).

 

Disk 2 is about 6-8 months old?

 

It looks like I have some High udma_crc_error_count also on disk 1 and 4...

I am not sure if there is a connection to the LCC's. that error is usually a cabling issue.

Unfortunately,  those drives are all on the same backplane/SAS cable so I think those are old leftover numbers from WHS box. I'll have to keep an eye out on those numbers and see if it is a continuing issue.

Why are you not using wdidle?

 

I ran that on all my WD EARS drives as soon as I heard about the LCC issue.

 

Here are my drives:
