2TB drives not accepted as one is actually 2.04TB... how do I proceed?

Featured Replies

Bought 2x 2TB drives off amazon to expand my ZFS SSD cache pool.

However it won't accept the new ones as they are almost exactly 2TB where as on close inspection the older SSD's are actually 2.04TB...

What do I do? Can I not just tell the system to ignore the 48GB?

Running 6.12.4

Stop array

Click edit pool

change from the existing 2 to a 3 disk.

then add the new drive.

It says 'error drive too small'

What is the current pool filesystem and profile/topology?

ZFS Pool of 2x drives in a mirror:

Sata.cach.zfs - ZFS Mirror - 2.04 TB (Fanxiang)

Sata.cach.zfs - ZFS Mirror - 2.04 TB (Fanxiang)

The usage is maybe half. so around 1TB.

Wanted to experiment with adding a single drive at a time to a ZFS pool. This is listed as a feature of 6.12..

New drive is sold as a 2TB drive but is slightly different size as per screenshots in previous post..

Maybe I can't do what I want to do anyway so have to backup the drives then create a new pool with 4x drives to start with and then make it a zraid1.

I still anticipate unraid erroring though and saying the drives are not the same size on a new pool..

Have attached diagnostics incase useful.

Adding a device to a zfs two way mirror will create a three way mirror, no added capacity, it just adds redundancy, and to do that you cannot add a smaller device, same size or larger only.

So there's no coding built it to accommodate this scenario...

One must buy ALL disks at the same time as there's no real way to avoid this as no shop tells you its 2.04TB they just sell as 2TB SSD.

Ok so say I wipe this pool and we take a scenario of building a new Zpool1 using the following drives:

2,000,398,934,016 bytes [2.00 TB]

2,048,408,248,320 bytes [2.04 TB]

2,000,398,934,016 bytes [2.00 TB]

2,048,408,248,320 bytes [2.04 TB]

Will it work?

You can use a couple of those SSDs to expand the current pool, but due to a bug the pool would need to be recreated with the smaller devices first, then stripe the other mirror.
