Why I ping full domain name is too slow on 6.12.4

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I installed unraid 6.12.4 that upgraded from 6.11.3 ->6.11.5->6.12.4. I don't notice the same issue on 6.11.3 or 6.11.5.

I found when I ping IP address of full domain name, that is OK.  When I ping full domain name that is too slow.

How to resolve it ?

any full domain name, such as www.ibm.com.

the system can resolve ip address very quickly, but ping is pending.

if I put ip address and full domain name in /etc/hosts, everything is OK.

it seems dns resolver problem.

Internet domains are not resolved on Unraid.  That is your DNS server.  Only local names are resolved on Unraid.

That's expected because the name can be found very quickly in the hosts file and the DNS server is not used to resolve the name.

You need to look into your DNS server and possibly change it to another one.

I never noticed it until the OP posted up his first query and I tested it.  It is not a problem for me as my use profile is strictly as a NAS.  So any DNS queries are minimal and the next time is inconsequential.

Here is the ping response from my Windows PC for comparsion:

Hi guy, thank you for your response. I think you find the key problem of this issue. But I don't know why?

because the same dns server for windows client or mac book is OK。

BTW, When I run nslookup, the system can resolve full domain name very quickly. But it seems dns resolver can't pass the result to the system, that result in system response full domain ping very slowly.

If as you suspected, the dns server can only resolve local domain name, the system should tell me domain name query failed rather than ping time are very slow.
