Can I create an array from 4x NVME drives in a single external thunderbolt enclosure?

Featured Replies

Dear UnRaid community,
I'm interested in buying an OWC Express 4M2 4-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure w/ Thunderbolt, which is an external enclosure that holds 4x NVMe drives over Thunderbolt (my host machine has a TB port)
Will UnRaid be able to read the SMART data for each drive separately and create an array with all 4 disks? or are there issues that make this unsuitable?

I'm scaling down my large, power-hungry tower into a smaller form factor, but I've read that external USB drives can be problematic, although not sure if this is the same for TB.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Hey, just thought I would ask if you ever did try this and get this to work? I have another post with the issues I am having as I have 3 of these same enclosures and my hope was to use them with Unraid, but no luck yet. They work fine in windows, but the Softraid software has its limits with twice the cost, so I'm really hoping Unraid is the better choice, but I cant get it to boot into Unraid when the drives are connected, so I hoped maybe you figured it out. Thanks for any info you may be able to provide!

Hi Jalari,
No, I never got a response, so I didn't commit.
Unfortunately I've read some very mixed comments about OWC, so I wasn't convinced enough to pay the money on an experiment that was not likely to succeed.
Regards

Dang, that is unfortunate. Yeah, its looking like I won't be getting any assistance any time soon either, so I guess I will need to go the Softraid route. I just hate that it only supports raid 5 and you cannot add more drives to the array without wiping it and starting it fresh. I really wanted Unraid to work, but it just will not. Oh well, thanks!
