October 4, 20232 yr Good Morning All, This is the second time this has happened to me which leaves me to suspect a bad file system on my disk. My Unraid system has one 6TB Disk and one 6TB Parity Disk. The system runs on a UPS and one day during a thunder and lighting storm I lost about half my data, mostly movies books text documents etc. Even though I did not loose power I chalked it up to the storm and some kind of power surge. Just this past week (Saturday Night) it happened again. Suddenly data loss again half the data is there half of it gone. Not the same things but different. This is why i think it is a bad file system. I put the server in Maintenance mode and checked the disk. I did see in it that it "needs repair". So I let it run fully and ran it again but did not get the message "needs repair" again. So I assumed the system fixed the problem. The data is still missing and did not return. I am starting to think it is a hard drive crash fail and i was preparing to buy a new hard disk to replace it and attempt to data recover the old data from the old one. It still boots and runs like everything is fine but half the data is missing. The first time it happen I posted here asking for help and uploaded the log and you responded with not seeing any issues in it (Thank You again) . I cannot even upload the log as the "Syslog Server" went missing. (Yes I know I am a bone head for storing it on the disk lesson learned) I am adding the S.M.A.R.T report to this post to see if you can find anything to help. Anyways here are my questions: 1) If I add a new hard drive to unsaid I know i have to clear it and format it but then i would also need to clear and format the parity disk? I do not want the parity disk to rebuild a bad file system on the new disk. 2) Is it possible to recover the data with a file system issue if it is one or does anyone else know of a better solution. I plan on connecting the drive to my main computer through a hard drive enclosure and USB to try to copy (Rsync) the data off and onto a back up 6TB drive that i have. 3) Lastly does anyone have any ideas one what will happen to nextcloud with just a new hard drive etc.... or do I need to capture that whole share too? (Might need to post this in the nc forum) Anyways if you got all the way down to here thank you and here is the SMART Report. krynn-diagnostics-20231004-1045.zip Any help is appreciated. Drezin
October 4, 20232 yr Community Expert It's not normal for xfs to lose so much data due to corruption, and I don't even see a lost+found folder, this happening twice suggests to me some hardware issue, like bad RAM, disk, controller, etc, I would suggest to backup and reformat the disk to create a new filesystem, possibly use zfs instead since that would show any future corruptions sooner, and at least run a couple of memtest passes before starting to use it agin, then keep monitoring zpool status for any issue.
October 5, 20232 yr Author Thanks for the reply @JorgeB, i do not think there is corruption by what you saw, I am going to remove the drive and put it in my main computer and see what it sees. I think that will tell me if the controller or the cable went bad on my server. Currently I am copying over the data that is there to a second external drive just to preserve what is there. I hope it is just a bad cable or not fully connected cable. Thanks, Drezin
