SMART Reallocated_Sector_Ct and Reported_Uncorrect error, but pre-clear plug in passed. Can I still use this HDD?

Featured Replies

Please see pre-clear report below. Ironwolf 4 TB, ~ 3 years. I was using them with a NAS box then recently built a DIY one w/ HP Elitedesk from 2020 I think. Previous NAS never reported any errors. The new setup has been running for ~ 1 month. All a sudden unRAID starts showing read errors. I looked on the forum and decided to do a pre-clear and see how it goes. Preclear "successful" but Reallocated_Sector_Ct  and Reported_Uncorrect increased w/ preclear. Is this likely a disk or MB issue? If disk, can the disk still be used given preclear successful or is it RIP/RMA? Thanks so much for your input!!

--> ATTENTION: Please take a look into the SMART report above for drive health issues.

I bet it has all to do with the limit set. The reallocated sector count of 72 is a little high in my personal opinion. I usually replace the drive after anything over about 30.

Disk is OK for now, difficult to say for how long, I would at least run a couple of extended SMART tests before putting it to use.

Thanks for your replies!! I actually ran the extended SMART tests twice before the preclear. Both times failed w/ 10% remaining w/ read errors. Based on your replies I think the drives are their way out. Just a bit over three years... data never exceeded 2 TB in total, probably every day there was a write about less than 1 GB to the drive from laptop document backup. Do you think if I used it wrong or is 3 years pretty typical for ironwolf? Thanks a lot!

It would be normal for the extended test to fail before the preclear since there were pending sectors, rewriting them fixed it for now, but they can come up again, hence the recommendation to run a couple of extended tests now.
