cannot access user shares from certain PCs on the LAN (authentication problem)

Featured Replies

Hello;

I have an un-raid server installed and running for some time now. It is at the latest version of software.

I have a couple of PCs on the LAN, which can attach to it, and upon providing the right user credentials, I'm able to browse and read/write the user shares from them.

One PC runs XP professional, the other one XP home edition.

I have two other PCs which cannot attach the shares. One is my work notebook, running Windows XP Pro, which is set to connect to my employer's network; when on the company network, it works just fine. The other one is my son's notebook which runs Windows Vista Home edition. Both of them behave the same when I try to connect to the un-raid server:

I provide the server name and the share (\\tower\Share) and I enter the user name and the password in the connect as different user name. The input window would disappear for a moment and would come back with "tower\username", waiting to input again the password. I input the password, but it doesn't work.

I'm not sure what the problem is.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you,

Horia G

What network are you connecting to?

Hello Bill,

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking about. I will try to add to everything I've listed in my initial message.

The physical LAN is all built around a WRT54GS. All of the computers are set to be members of the same workgroup (HOME), with the exception of my work notebook, which being set to access the employer's LAN and authenticate against the Active Directory, I cannot mess around with that setup (without the risk of not being able to connect to work anymore).

Some of the computers are connecting via wireless, some connect via the wire. I have 3 computers which can map the user shares w/o any problem, and I have 2 computers which don't. I use the same connection/mapping procedure on all 5.

So... It is something which escapes me, and can't figure out what.

Thanks for taking a stab at it.

Horia G

Horia, I might suggest that you ensure your other 2 machines have "Windows File and Printer Sharing" enabled.  I have had similar problems on some of my home machines in the past, and this fixed it.  Very simply, I went in and temporarily shared something on the hard drive--this installed the file sharing.  I was then able to see and map to other shares.  You can even delete the share afterwards and it's still installed.

Hope this helps.
