Hardrives not recognized (Solved - bad hard drives)

Featured Replies

I am new to unraid and setting up a new server

I initially booted up the server and ran preclear (1.3) on 2 of the drives.  1 drive failed and one drive I did not attempt becuase it was not being recognized as a sata drive.  It showed up as hda.  When the preclear finished successfully on 2 drives, I rebooted the server and entered the Bios.  I set the drives from IDE to AHCI.

Now when I boot up it recognizes the 3rd drive as a tape drive and th 4 th drive does get recognized, eventually.

When I run the command dmesg|grep STA|grep link I get the following info...

ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)

ata2: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)

ata3: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310)

ata3: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps

ata6: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310)

ata6: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps

When I go to //tower:8080, there are only 2 drives are recognized.  The 2 that were successfully precleared.

My MB is a Asrock 880GM-LE

The hard drives not being recognized are Western Digital Caviar Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Running version 5.0 12b

syslogs are attached.

Any help would be greatly appreciated by this newbie!

It may be a cable problem. Check SATA and power connectors. Are you using any power splitters? The log only shows 3 drives being recognized.

Thanks......I will redo the power cable and the sata cables and see what happens. I will post the results.

I believe that I have 2 bad hard drives.  I switched the power and sata cables and the sata ports.  The good hard drives still show up and the bad ones do not on any combination.  Must be the hard drives.  I have never had this happen with western digital drives let alone 2 be bad in the same box.  Must be a bad batch of drives.

Thanks for your help.  I havw some on 1 TB drives laying around.  I will finish building this server with them while doing a RMA on these 2 drives

Added my three 1 TB drives and everything was recognized immediately.  Running preclear on all 3 now.  Should be done in the morning.  This will at least let me get started and I will get to practice add bigger drives to the array.

I tried to add these hard drives to my regular PC and it will not recognize them either.  What a waste of time!

Thanks for help and I will mark this as solved.
