February 28, 200818 yr Hi, I have created a few user shares such as movie, tv, music, ...,etc. Now I want to combine movie and tv to be under a new user share called "video". What is the proper way to accomplish this task? I tried the "undo" button on the "share" page, but it seems to be not designed for that purpose. I did create a new user share called "video" and manually copy all the files including "movie" and "tv" directory over. How do I remove the user share "movie" and "tv" from the system? Thanks, --Tom
February 28, 200818 yr a user share must be empty before it can be deleted...if you moved your movie and tv folders into a new folder called video, then restart samba by rebooting (or stopping and re-starting the array might work), the videos share should show up automatically...you can then delete the now-empty movie and tv shares if they haven't disappeared automatically. i'm still learning user-shares myself, so please excuse me if i missed a step or added one too many...i do know that just by adding a folder in the root (such as "videos"), it will appear as a user-share, if user-shares are enabled, and i also have found out that a user-share must be completely empty before it can be removed (watch out for hidden left-over files that OSX might leave behind...they messed me up a couple of times).
February 29, 200818 yr Author Tillkrueger, Thanks for replying. My question is that there is no step by step instruction on the user menu on how to delete the user shares. Should I telnet to the server and just delete the directory? Where to find the directory? I don't want to just login to the system and delete the directories I can find in case there is some configuration involves. --Tom
February 29, 200818 yr The disk shares are found at /mnt/disk1 /mnt/disk2 /mnt/disk3 etc.. /mnt/disk15 The user shares are automatically created based on the top level "disk" shares. Just stop and re-start the array once you get the folders on the disk shares the way you want and the user-shares will be created appropriately. the user shares are at /mnt/user You can telnet in, then install and use midnight commander... (Tom posted installation instructions in another thread) or use the "cp" and "mv" commands to copy and move files... "mkdir" to make new directories... "mv" renames existing directories. Joe L.
March 1, 200818 yr Author Hi Joe, Thanks for the hint. I telnet to the server and delete the directories /mnt/disk1/TV and /mnt/disk1/movie, then stop and start the server. They are gone now. --Tom
March 4, 200818 yr On the SMU Shares page, you can change the Share name of 'movies' to 'video' (and click Apply). Now when you refresh My Network Places, you should see 'moves' disappear, and 'video' appear. See note below. Now drag all the files from 'tv' to 'movies'. Finally, on the SMU Shares page, change the name of 'tv' to blank (ie, backspace over the name) and click Apply. This will delete the 'tv' user share, provided it's empty. If it doesn't delete, and you think you've moved all the files, check for hidden/system files (sneaky devils). NOTE: you need 4.2.3 or later to do this because of a bug in user share renaming
