Unable to format drives after starting array (new setup)

Featured Replies

Hi all, new unraid user here.

Built following disk setup (following cache guide from SpaceInvader One)

  • Main Array
    • 3 x 18TB HDD (1 parity, 2 xfs array drives)
  • Cache_nvme
    • 2 x 1TB nvme (supposed to be ZFS mirrored, will be utilised for docker/vm shares etc)
  • Cache_ssd
    • 2 x 2TB SSD (zfs mirrored, cache drive for main array (arr-suite etc)

After building this and starting the array it's asking me to format the drives as they are unrecognized. After proceeding with the format unraid refreshes, saying it formats, but then goes back to the Main tab , drives still unrecognizable.

Only thing I can think of is I initially created the cache pools and forgot to set them to ZFS, so they got formatted to btrfs. No clue on how to reset the nvme/ssd drives to their initial state and get them to format.

The main array did format to xfs correctly (along with the nvme/ssd to btrfs) so no issues there.

Anyone got a clue on how to proceed? Diagnostics file attached.

Thanks community!

Ok managed to solve this one with a bit more googling and SpaceInvader's videos:

  1. Stop the array
  2. Start the array in maintenance mode. This starts the array without mounting disks (assuming this is where it went wrong for me).
  3. Open cache pool (both in my case) and "erase" the disks. File system type should revert back to auto.
  4. Stop the array
  5. Click back on the pool and choose the desired file system (zfs in my case, took the chance to enable Compression aswell)
  6. Start the array
  7. Format the disks

et voila, that worked. This was mainly an issue with my lack of knowledge in unraid i'm assuming.

Hope this might help someone in the future who experiences the same.
