Unraid NAS/Plex server. First Time build own homeserver

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, I'm new to this topic and it would be great to have some feedback for the hardware.

What is your budget?

1000-1500€ for the Build of the Homeserver with SSD and HDD

How many drives do you want your server to be able to support and how much capacity do you need?

For the start I need ~ 20 TB. So 2 HDDs with Raid 1?

Is expandability important to you?  If so, what's your long term goal?

I will probally use Fractal Design Node 804, Acrylfenster (FD-CA-NODE-804-BL-W) as my Case.

Are you interested in running additional apps?

  • Plex (max. 2-3 Streams in 4K 60hz)
  • Nextcloud
  • AdGuard
  • paperless ngx
  • bitwarden
  • And then see what Unraid does have in the App Store :)

Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives?  If you don't have a specific need for 7200 rpm drives, then choose green drives.

Not sure what is meant with green drives

I thougth about 2 Toshiba Enterprise Capacity MG08ACA 16TB

What do you plan to run for hard drives?

2 Toshiba Enterprise Capacity MG08ACA 16TB

And not sure if I should use a SSD Chace?

Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build?  This includes drives.

No

Else I think about 32 GB Ram and read it should be an Intel with Quick Sync for Plex?

What I prefer is low watt usage.

This setup should be good for the next 10 Years :)

Maybe also order a new usb drive is there any recommendation ?

Thanks for the response. If I understand correctly setting up the docker locations on an ssd will provide more speed and no hdd's spinning when the server is on. what happens if it turn off will it then move to the hdd?

Correct, Intel's Quick Sync is a default choice for transcoding.

If just direct-playing then it doesn't really matter but overall Intel is still considered to be a more stable and efficient platform for a NAS.

Regarding the USB stick - please be aware of fakes.

It's usually recommended to choose a USB 2.0 part.

It's a long thread but I'd advise to read till the end.
