January 3, 20242 yr Hi all, I'm completely new to this topic. I repurposed an old PC i had laying around and installed unraid onto that. I got it all working so far as a basic NAS. Now I wanted to look into being able to stream some media (Photos, Videos) from the server to my TV. I was thinking it should be able to "simply" stream the media to my chromecast, which is connected to my TV. (Note: it is a pretty old chromecast; no remote, nothing) So I did a bit of googling and found out if you use a media server on unraid (like jellyfin or plex) you can manage your media and also stream it to different devices. So i tried out jellyfin and set it all up and also added some (test) media files to the unraid server. Jellyfin is able to play them no problem, but I am unable to stream them to anywhere basically (Google Cast Unsupported). After some more googling, I found out that a chromecast needs a https connection and jellyfin can't do that, so I have to use a reverse proxy or something? At this point my technical network knowledge comes to an end. So my question would be: Is there an "easy" way to stream media files that i put on the unraid server to my tv?

January 8, 20242 yr Author I already tried (unsuccessfully) using the jellyfin phone app to cast to my TV. What other options do I have to "use my phone" to cast media to my TV from unraid? Your reply doesn't give a lot of intel into HOW to use my phone for my usecase....
June 15, 20242 yr Hi! I am not an unraid user yet, I'm only looking for info about how to use unraid as a NAS and media server and what hardware will meet my needs. So please be patient with me... My first thought when reading this post was if there is any way you can run Google Chrome browser on your unraid machine (with docker or in an os in a VM) then you can cast any file to your chromecast with Google Chrome: Cast a Chrome tab on your TV I would appreciate so much if any unraid user can verify there is a way to cast from unraid to chromecast directly without using a 3rd device like a smartphone. Then I can hide the unraid machine out of sight and my wife can use the Chromecast remote (she doesn't like touchscreens).

Your unRAID server holds all your media in properly organized folders. Then install the Plex Media Server docker in unRAID, configure all your media to it. Then on your smart TV (tablet, phone, PC, etc), install the Plex app. There should be some intro videos to Plex and all. It's a big learning journey, but oh sooo sweet in the end.
June 16, 20242 yr Thanks Hernandito! II haven't still not started using unRAID, so I installed the Plex app on my Chromecast and the Plex server application on my Windows 10 laptop. It is possible to cast from Plex server on the laptop to the Chromecast, but I had to install the Plex app on my Android phone to access the Plex server and browse through the media library on the laptop and start the playback on the phone (the TV and the laptop is located in separate rooms). When the playback has started I can put he phone away and pause, rewind and fast forward with the Chromecast remote. This is very convinient! Now I'm considering a Lincstation N1, the size makes it easy to find a location near the TV. I suppose it is possible to connect the Lincstation N1 and the TV with a HDMI cable if casting over WiFi isn't working for some reason. So my advice to the original poster is to try casting from the unRAID machine with Plex, and if casting over WiFi doesn't work, try instead to connect the unRAID machine and the TV with a HDMI cable (if the device has the connectors).
