lionelhutz
You seem to have a very expensive motherboard and processor for a server. You don't need anything close to that power unless you plan on doing some serious transcoding using the server. I'm also not sure if that Rocketraid card will work or not. I'm assuming you pulled it from the forums? Even then, if you can find a motherboard with 2 x PCIe x4 slots you can do 2 of the Supermicro cards that are 8 ports each for less than that card costs. You will also need SAS to SATA breakout cables for either of these cards. You ever consider a Norco case (4220 I think is the 24 bay case) instead of the tower and the hot-swap bays? It would be comparible in price to that case you picked. It also comes with the hotswap already saving you around $400 there and it also has the SAS connectors on the backplanes so you just run 2 or 3 cables from each SATA card to the backplane. Rajahal
Please tell us how you intend to use your server so that we can better tailor our advice. Quote Link to comment
jbkicker2
I plan on using it as just a media storage unit and file backup.. also i didn't choose the norco server chassis because i do not want it to be rack mountable i like the tower option. thanks. and i will look into the other controller cards. lionelhutz
An Atom will work for serving files. So, you can pick a much lower end processor and it will be more than capable. An i3 would be way more than enough to serve files. I wouldn't believe you need to spend more than $300 to get a really good unRAID suitable motherboard and CPU combo. You pretty much have to stick to the hot-swap bays if you want a tower. They are more pricy, but that's the price you pay for a tower. Peter Quote Link to comment
