Question about HDD swapping

Featured Replies

My understanding is that Unraid identifies disks and keeps track of them via their Serial Number.

My motherboard only has 4 SATA ports for disk drives. I want to test a PCIe SATA expansion card that some folks have reported success with for Unraid. Can I just move one of my disks to another drive bay which is connected to that expansion card and see if the system recognizes it without issues?

If I can do this, is the correct procedure to power down the system, move the drive, then power the system back up? (I don't know exactly how "hot swappable" drives are, and if drives "don't mind" being disconnected while being powered on). My instincts tell me that powering down first is probably the best way to do it, but I just wanted to ask to see what the official/agreed upon answer is.

The card for reference:

Thanks!

It's fine assuming it's not a RAID controller.
