Can I manually move files between disks from folders of the same Share

Featured Replies

Here's the situation.

I have 4 disks plus a parity drive, all of 750 GB.

All my shares are supposed ot be on all four disks with split level 1 and High water selected. The last disk I added is almost empty, but some of my shares aren't even showing up on that drive, while the other drives are filling up with stuff I've added to them recently. I've noticed that if I go into the drives themselves (not the shares) and manually move data from one disk to another, it doesn't show up as still being in that share. Would it do so if I restarted my array?

2 more questions, related to this situation:

1) I think I'm going to change from High Water to "most free" in order to try and force the data to go into the almost empty drive. If that doesn't work I know there's something up.

1a) Is it safe to change the allocation method without losing data in an existing share?

1b) Will the array have to be restarted?

2) On the drive that my Movies share isn't showing up in (despite it being assigned to that disk), can I manually create a folder called Movies and move files to it? Will it show up as part of the real share when I restart the server?

Thanks for any help offered.

Joe
